Ice dams: why they form and what we do

A roof ice dam is a heat problem wearing a weather costume. Natural Resources Canada puts the mechanism plainly: heat escaping from the house warms the underside of the roof, the snow on it melts, and the meltwater runs down to the eave, which is cold because there is no heated space beneath it. There it freezes. A few days of that and you have a ridge of ice across the bottom of the roof with a pool of water behind it, sitting above the shingles rather than under them, so it goes wherever it likes.

What you are looking for:

  • A thick band of ice along the eave, often behind or over the eavestrough.
  • Icicles big enough that people stop and take pictures.
  • Water stains appearing on an upstairs ceiling, at the top of an exterior wall, or around a window head.

What not to do. Do not go at it with a hammer, a hatchet or a chisel. Ice does not break away cleanly from shingles; it takes the granules and often the shingle edge with it, so you buy a roof repair to save a gutter. And a ladder set on frozen ground against an ice-loaded eave is one of the worst places to spend a January afternoon.

What we do. Ice dam removal first, because the water behind the dam is what is doing damage right now. Then we clear the eavestrough and the downspouts: a trough already packed with ice cannot take the next thaw either, and a downspout frozen at the bottom refills the trough from below.

Then we fix the reason it formed. Ice dam prevention is attic work rather than roof work: topping up insulation so less heat reaches the deck, air-sealing the leaks that carry warm air up through the ceiling, and making sure the soffit intake vents are open and not stuffed with insulation. Soffit and fascia is work we already do, so the intake side is straightforward to put right at the same time as the eavestroughs.

If the dam has already pushed water inside, that becomes a roof question as well: see roof leaks.

What actually moves the price

No games: these are the honest variables your quote is built from.

Linear feet & corners
More corners and downspouts mean more labour and parts. We measure, you see the math.
Storeys & access
A walk-up bungalow prices differently than a 3-storey with tight access. No surprises on build day.
Material & gauge
Standard 5" aluminum vs 6" oversized, gauge, and colour all move the number honestly.
What we find up there
Rotten fascia gets photographed and priced before we touch it, never invoiced after.

Heated eavestroughs and roof heat cables

A roof heat cable is a low-output heating element run in a zigzag along the eave and then down through the eavestrough and the downspout. It does not melt the snow off your roof and it is not meant to. What it does is keep one continuous channel open from the roof edge, through the trough, to the ground, so that when meltwater arrives it has somewhere to go instead of pooling behind ice.

Be clear about what a cable is for. An eavestrough heating cable manages the symptom. It does not fix attic heat loss, and a house losing enough heat to build a serious dam will keep building one, cable or no cable. The honest order is: fix the attic where you can, and use cable where the roof geometry means you cannot. North-facing eaves in permanent shade, valleys that dump onto a low roof, an unheated porch roof under a heated wall, a flat section behind a dormer: those are the places a cable earns its keep, because there is no insulation fix available.

How it goes in. The cable is clipped along the shingle edge and hung through the trough and downspout, and it has to run from a suitable exterior circuit with GFCI protection. Most homeowners want it on a thermostat or a moisture sensor rather than a switch they will forget about in April. Gutter heater installation is worth doing at the same time as an eavestrough replacement, while the trough is off the house and the clips can go on cleanly.

One thing not to confuse. Heated gutter guards are a separate product. The free Gutterguard that comes with every full eavestrough install is a leaf screen, not a heated one, and it does not do the job a cable does. If you want both, they are two line items on the quote and we will price them that way.

Questions homeowners actually ask

How long does a full eavestrough replacement take?

Most homes are done in a single day. Larger or multi-storey homes can take two. You'll get the schedule in writing with your quote.

Do I need to be home during the work?

No. It's exterior work — we call before we start, send photos as we go, and walk you through everything when you're back.

What if you find rotten fascia or soffit?

We photograph it, price the repair in writing, and wait for your go-ahead. Nothing is ever added to the invoice after the fact.

Are gutter guards worth it?

If you have trees within 15 metres, yes — they end ladder season. Every full install we do includes Gutterguard free.

What warranty do I get?

Two years on our workmanship plus the 10-year manufacturer's warranty on materials, both in writing.

Do you remove ice dams?

Yes. We take the ice off, then clear the eavestrough and downspouts so the next thaw has somewhere to drain. After that we look at why the dam formed, which is nearly always heat escaping into the attic. Call 1-800-675-1055 if there is water coming inside.

Will heat cables stop ice dams for good?

They manage the symptom, not the cause. A cable keeps a drainage channel open through the trough and downspout so meltwater gets away. It does not stop heat escaping into your attic, so on most homes the lasting fix is insulation, air sealing and open soffit vents, with cable where the roof shape leaves no other option.

Is the free Gutterguard heated?

No. Gutterguard is a leaf screen that keeps the trough clear, and it comes free with every full eavestrough install. Heat cable is a separate product with a separate price, and it needs an exterior electrical supply. If you want both, they appear as two line items on your quote.
